Meanwhile, back in Mantis World…
It isn’t the most crisp praying mantis shot, and I had the ISO cranked way up, but I got a lot of background bokeh in this one that I liked. Did a little arty-farty Photoshop processing as well (that’s the technical term, right?).
Red, White & Blue
This is about as patriotic as we got today. Day 7 of 105+ degree temps, so we took it easy and basically lounged around for most of the holiday.

They’re waiting for me to go inside so they can come down off the roof and eat their dinner.
Mandibles
I was fascinated by this big ol’ beetle in the garden today. It was wrestling with the carcass of a roly poly bug, moving it around, chewing on it, and maybe trying to bury it. It kept digging around in the dirt anyway. Honestly, I don’t know what it was doing…but check out those mandibles!
Just Another Mantis Monday
Can you stand another praying mantis photo? They won’t be around forever so I have to take advantage of them while they’re here. Especially when they’re posing like this.

He looks like he’s giving me the stink-eye, which may be because I accidentally gave him a shower when watering the garden tonight.
Cluster
Our local power company is responsible for trimming trees that grow too close to their lines, and after running the cuttings through a wood chipper they offer them to the public to use as mulch. Last year I got a truck load of their mulch, and since then I’ve seen some different varieties of mushrooms in the garden. I’m guessing it’s related.
SSSSee Ya
It was hard to choose just one photo to upload today. I snapped some closeups of a beautiful great horned owl (a permanent resident at the nature center), a pair of tiger swallowtail butterflies on the bank of the river (one crawled around on my hand for a bit) and this scaly guy.
I’m normally very careful when hiking around by the river, and today was no different. It was hot out and I knew there could be snakes around, so I was making sure to scan both sides of the path… right up to the point when I became distracted by some turkeys on the other side of the trail – that’s when I heard hissing and rattling right by my foot! I jumped, the snake jumped, we went in opposite directions and fortunately that was the extent of the drama. Phew!
So, since this guy nearly gave me a heart attack, he gets to be the photo of the day. The rest of the photos are at my Flickr account if anyone wants to see owls and butterflies.
