Robber
Robber (or assassin) fly in my garden. I don’t usually see them here, although they are common at the nature center where I go walking regularly.
Skipper
This was a favorite butterfly when I was a kid. I think, aside from it being especially cute, it was the only butterfly I could consistently catch with just my hands. I was into catching bugs and reptiles back then, but nowadays I just use my camera to capture their little souls. 😉
Don’t Scratch It!
This photo was taken at the historic city cemetery. I sometimes feel a bit odd, enjoying the cemetery so much, but it’s a fabulous place. The gardens are maintained by dedicated volunteers and they are quite beautiful and filled with roses, birds and native bees. The tombs and monuments are like nothing you see in boring old modern cemeteries. The statue in this photo marks a grave, and it is huge! She’s got a bit of a mossy rash on her neck and elbow, but she wears it well. 😉

Farm-to-Fork
My lunch today was a BLT sandwich, with the L & T harvested from my garden, the B a vegan version made by my sister, and the bread baked by me this morning.
Paper Thin
Kitchen tip #587: A mandolin slicer makes life so much easier.
Before posting I had to decide between the original photo with vivid red onion slices, and this desaturated version. I do love color, but I also like how line and shape becomes the primary focus in this version.
Heart
Morning glory vines grow like weeds all over the garden, so it’s not terribly difficult to find a heart-shaped leaf. The trick is to find one that’s isolated (this one was not so much) and well lit.
Dahlia
I had two dahlias last summer, and one disappeared completely. I think something ate it. I don’t even remember what color it was, but I don’t think it was as pretty as this one. This one sometimes looks more yellow, sometimes more pink – depends on the stage of the blossom. Right now there are not many flowers blooming in my garden, so this one is getting a lot of attention.
Little Cukes
We have cucumbers! I don’t know if there will be enough for pickling, but I’m happy to get what I get. This is a tiny one – there are a couple of other plants in the garden that are a little farther along. I’ve observed big, black carpenter bees pollinating the flowers on these plants. Thanks, bees!
